Mark L. Redmond

Stories for Grownups

For nearly twenty years, Mark L. Redmond had been telling stories about the old West to young readers. Finally, he’s turning his attention to “big kids.” Here’s a collection of some of his best stories, including three that were unpublished until now. Redmond’s stories are not typical tales of shootouts and quick draws. In his unique way, he has created some delightful characters who choose to outsmart their opponents instead of out-shooting them. Redmond is the author of the six-book middle grade series, The Adventures of Arty Anderson (Sword of the Lord Publishers, Murfreesboro, Tennessee). His story “The Spittoon” was a finalist in the 2010 Moonlight Mesa competition; “The Switch” appeared in a storyteller’s edition of Grit magazine; and “The Reward” was published in Elbow Creek. Mark and his wife Susie are workcampers. They live in a motor home and work in camp resort parks from Indiana to Arizona. Together they have six children and nine grandchildren.

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author Mark L. Redmond

Mark L. Redmond taught high school English for 29 years in South Bend, Indiana.

He has been a freelance writer for over 30 years. An avid reader since childhood, Redmond has studied the history of the American West and has focused on showing his middle grade readers what the old West was really like.

He has published over 25 short stories and articles, a six-book middle grade fiction series (The Adventures of Arty Anderson), and a collection of short stories (Five for the Trail).

A member of Western Writers of America and Single Action Shooting Society, Redmond has been studying the West through reading and travel for most of his life (and he’s an old timer, born in 1953!).

Extensive research and travel throughout the western states combine to make his fiction accurate. Redmond currently lives in Indiana with his wife Susie. He and Susie are work-campers, who live in their motor home as they continue to explore the West.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Indiana? I have lived most of my adult life in Indiana, and I’m happy to represent our state as a Hoosier author. Indiana was, after all, the West at one time.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I believe my love of reading had a lot to do with my desire to write. From my elementary school days, my mind has always been full of stories that I had to write.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Because I grew up full of life and mischief, I knew how to shape my characters. Because I grew up believing in God, my faith comes through in the lives of many of my characters. Because I grew up reading, I recognized what a good story looks like.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? Probably in the early ’80’s.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Being able to create stories that leave my readers asking for more stories.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Completing a 6-book middle grade fiction series

How many published books do you have? Seven

Please tell us the titles and the genre of each? Arty Goes West, Arty and the Hunt for Phantom, Arty and the Texas Ranger, Arty’s Long Day, Arty and the Cattle Rustlers, Arty’s Tough Trail, and Five for the Trail.

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript? Usually after I’ve written the manuscript

Please list any awards that you have won. I did win Honorable Mention in a Moonlight Mesa short story contest (one of the stories later published in Five for the Trail).

Which book title would you like featured in this interview? Arty Goes West

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for? I can’t say for sure, but the main character was based on my 11-year-old son Ben.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Follow your dream, no matter how long the road to success may be. When I started submitting my first Arty Anderson book, my son was 11 years old. When he handed me the author’s copies that had arrived in the mail, he was 22.

Who is your favorite author and why? Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, is the first author who comes to mind. He was a master at starting a different scene in each of the first three chapters of a book and then weaving them together into an incredible story.
